The Rzeszów Culture Incubator, as well as Estrada Rzeszowska itself, is located in a modernist villa at ul. Jagiellońska 24 in Rzeszów.
The history of the building is closely linked to the Janusz family, owners of the famous photographic studio "E. Janusz", operating at ul. Sandomierska 18 (currently ul. Grunwaldzka) in the years 1886-1951. The founder of the studio was Edward Janusz, who in the following years ran the studio together with his wife Leopoldyna, and then the family business was taken over by their descendants - but that is a completely different story.
The villa was built at the initiative of Leopoldyna (Krause) Janusz, who in 1908 bought three plots of land in the Podzamcze area. Two at the newly built ul. Poniatowskiego and one at ul. Jagiellońska. The properties were to serve her children: Dorota, Fryderyk, Maria, and Helena. Our villa was built for our son, Fryderyk Janusz.
The villa at Jagiellońska 24 is the first investment in Rzeszów with such a modern form, representing the trend of moderate modernism. Its author was probably the architect Franciszek Stążkiewicz, who was friends with the family. The villa was built in the years 1932-1934 on a plot with a garden surrounding the house. The decision to choose such a bold project at that time is evidence of Leopoldyna's great openness to novelties. The building was adapted to the surrounding landscape, a large corner terrace and windows of the living rooms facing south guaranteed plenty of sunlight. The interiors were characterized by a high standard of finish with the use of parquet floors, ceramic tiles, decorative stucco profiles or decorative span balustrades in the Art Deco style. However, the building itself, with a cubist form, was deprived of architectural decorative elements.
During World War II, the villa was occupied by the Germans, using it as apartments for Wehrmacht officers and storage facilities (there was a ski storage facility in the basement), and then it became a lodging building. During this period, Fryderyk's family changed their place of residence to adapt to the situation.
The following years were associated with a change of owners, and in the 1970s, the villa was sold to the State Enterprise of Entertainment Events "Estrada", which operates to this day under the changed name Estrada Rzeszowska. In 2022, the building underwent a general renovation of the building's facade, financed from city funds.
Currently, the ground floor of the building houses the headquarters of the Rzeszów Culture Incubator and the secretariat, and the next two floors are occupied by the office space of Estrada Rzeszowska, while the basement of the villa was transformed into a professional recording studio, Estrada Studio. Soon, the area around the building will regain its former glory, full of plants, shrubs, and places to relax - in a word, it will be a GARDEN!
